Injuries and Illness Facts

  • In 2002 the CDC.Gov reported that 5,524 occupational fatalities occurred and there were 4.7 million new non-fatal injuries and illnesses reported in private industry.
     
  • US Department of Health and Human Services National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health reported information from private companies stating that most injuries were sprains, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and back injures.
     
  • Lifting crates, nursing homes, and heavy boxes were the cause of many injuries.
     
  • Overexertion during lifting or repetition of motion is the cause of many injuries as well.
     
  • For injuries off the job, which resulted in loss time, it was reported 705,800 cases resulted from over exertion or repetitive motion specifically.
         - 65% affected the back while lifting.
         - 52% affected the back while pushing or pulling objects.
         - 58% affected the back from overexertion while holding, carrying or turning objects.
     
  • Statistics show that median time away from work due to overexertion injuries were caused by lifting, holding, carrying, turning objects and pushing.
         - 6 days for lifting.
         - 6 days for holding, carrying or turning objects.
         - 7 days for pushing.
     
  • 83,483 injuries or illnesses occurred in other and unspecified overexertion events.
     
  • As a result, 92,576 injuries or illnesses occurred in repetitive motion, including typing or key entry, repetitive use of tools, and repetitive placing, grasping or moving of objects other than tools.
         - 55% affected the wrist
         - 69% affected the back
         - 7% affected the shoulder.
     
  • As a result of injury, median time away from work was 18 days.
     

Physical Activity was found to be the best way to improve health wellness.  Studies show on average 5 days of moderate activities of cardio and weight lifting exercise has promoted good health and prevented illness and injuries.
